What are the criteria that Tisane uses to mark bigotry?

Our definition of bigotry is hostility towards, negative opinions about, and calls for discrimination and/or violence targeting an entire demographic group or individuals belonging to it because of the association with the group.

As of now, we are detecting references to:

  • ethnicity or race
  • religious community (or nonreligious people as a whole)
  • sexual minorities
  • particular age groups
  • people with disabilities and obese people
  • foreigners / immigrants
  • women

A statement about a group member committing a wrongdoing will not be tagged as an instance of bigotry. A statement about the entire group committing a wrongdoing will be tagged as an instance of bigotry. An association between one’s feelings and being a member is a group will also be tagged as an instance of bigotry.
