How do I detect hate speech and bigotry in general?

Every detected instance of bigotry is logged as an instance of abuse (see How to detect abuse? for information how to work with the abuse detection) with the type bigotry. Like with other types of abuse, severity level is logged alongside the abuse type.

Note that not every attack on a social group constitutes bigotry. Attacks on these social groups constitute bigotry:

    • ethniticies
    • religious and ethnoreligious groups
    • sexual minorities, except those illegal in most countries (e.g. pedophiles)
    • people of a particular race (regardless whether people of colour or white)
    • expatriates / immigrants
    • nonreligious people
    • disabled people
    • obese people

  • either of the genders

Implicit bigotry towards one of the targeted groups without naming it (e.g. “get out of my country”) is also in the scope of recognition, although is significantly more difficult to recognize.

Attacks on:

  • public figures
  • people of particular occupation
  • people who underwent specific experience, even if the experience was traumatic

are not tagged as bigotry.

Please keep in mind that we do not tag posts expressing opinions on universally condemned or universally praised figures. For example, “X did nothing wrong” or “Y was right” will not be tagged as bigotry.
