What is the mental_content feature?
The mental_content feature labels families that reference some kind of direct or indirect speech. For example:
“…the idea that they have to be together…”
“…the sign says that it is not allowed to smoke…”
“…she is certain they will succeed…”
It is not limited to any part of speech, and in many languages, the syntactic structures used for indirect speech may be confused with structures used for other purposes. In English, two main clauses may be stacked one next to the other without any connector.
Marking the handful of relevant concepts helps minimise the number of false positives in these tricky situations.
