What is the search query translation?
Looking up information in a foreign language is not trivial.
You can’t translate a search query in a machine translation engine: they are built for grammatical sentences and most common cooccurrences. There is not enough context in most search queries. What “ICE” does the user have in mind? Is it “frozen water” or “Immigration & Customs Enforcement“?
Even when you can translate the entire content to the language of the user, it is prohibitively expensive. It is also extremely inefficient and slow to machine-translate or pay humans to translate (when it’s highly specialized) for megabytes of text only to look for a specific paragraph.
Or, a native speaker is hired to search, and this is what many of the “analysts” exactly do. What if it’s not possible?
What do you do?
Tisane offers a simple but fool-proof way:
- Tisane parses the query.
- You choose the meaning you have in mind.
- Tisane generates the query for the target language.
